Norfolk Pine Wood Turnings by Rick FrazierNorfolk pine is a good wood for woodturning. The wood is naturally a light color, but doesn't show significant grain until it spalts. The branches grow in horizontal rows, resulting in the interesting knots displayed in many wood turnings.Norfolk Pine, though somewhat plain when first cut, can be particularly beautiful after it spalts, which enhances the grain and adds interesting shapes and coloration. It is normally turned when the wood is green, because it tends to tear out and leave a rough surface when turned as a dry wood. Most objects made from Norfolk Pine are finished with a penetrating finish such as Danish Oil, because it brings out the beauty and shows the translucence of the wood in thin sections. Some of the Norfolk Pine vessels are shown with a light shining down from above to enhance the translucence. Click on any image to see a full size picture in a new window.
